I'm using an infrared remote so why am I still unable to learn IR commands in Communicator 5?

Communicator 5 may be seeing something that it thinks is the IR unit, but it really is not.  C5 requires the internal IR unit to be on COM3, but sometimes it is on COM4.  

In device manager, the IR unit is called "USB Serial Device".  In device manager you may also see "USB Serial Port", which is NOT the IR unit.

To resolve the issue, please follow the steps below.

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Expand or double-click Ports (COM & LPT) 
  3. If you see USB Serial Device (COM4) (or any COM port other than 3) go on to step 4; otherwise if you see USB Serial Device (COM3) contact technical support since the following steps will not fix the issue on your device.  
  4. Right-click on USB Serial Device (COM4) and choose Properties
  5. Select the Port Settings tab
  6. Choose Advanced...
  7. Next to COM Port Number: choose COM3. It may say (in use).  If so, do it anyway and follow the "Additional Steps" below once these steps are completed.
  8. Choose OK and then select Yes when asked if you want to continue
  9. Choose OK again.  If you do not need the "Additional Steps" because COM3 was not in use, skip to the "Concluding Steps".
Additional Steps
  1. Now, right-click on USB Serial Port (COM3) and choose Properties
  2. Select the Port Settings tab
  3. Choose Advanced...
  4. Next to COM Port Number: choose COM4
  5. Choose OKand then OK again.
  6. Close Device Manager and restart the device.
  7. Once the device has restarted, go back into Device Manager and make sure USB Serial Device is now on COM3 and that USB Serial Port is now on COM4.
Concluding Steps
  1. Right-click on USB Serial Device (COM3) again and this time choose Uninstall device
  2. Select Uninstall
  3. Close Device Manager and restart the device.
You probably do not have to make any changes to the IR Hardware Settings in Communicator 5, but if C5 cannot find the Tdx Micro IR unit you should go into IR Hardware Settings to search for the IR.  You can find help with this in the User's Guide or by contacting technical support.
