The ability to read and write is one of the most important skills a child will learn in school. However, children with severe speech and language disabilities often demonstrate significantly decreased literacy abilities. Without literacy, an individual is significantly limited in the educational, vocational, and social opportunities found in almost all activities of daily living.
The path to literacy is to teach words that, individually and in combination, provide power and opportunities across settings. Core First, based on current research, uses a powerful set of core words that are delivered in a systematic way to encourage growth. In addition, quick and easy access to Word Lists (categorical lists of words, mostly nouns) provides the “fringe” words that are required to compose rich, unique messages. This vocabulary is well organized and is there to help support communicators as they build their own ideas without requiring them to have high levels of phonological knowledge.
Core First also includes a set of Keyboards that grow in a systematic way as well as access to Accessible Literacy Learning (ALL), a reading program that was specifically developed for children who are non-verbal
To further support core language learning and use, Core First Learning provides books and lessons to teach three key concepts: 1.) the meaning of the word, 2.) how the word looks and works in connected text, 3.) and how to find the word on the device. Five days of lessons, interactive activities, books and more are all provided to systematically teach core words.
