Training Type: Implementation Workshop

In this session, we will review a core word strategy approach supporting both communication and literacy development for early communicators. Based on best practices, participants will review research and strategies to support core vocabulary for communication as well as core word lesson plans to support literacy development. We will demonstrate how the Snap + Core First communication software can target core vocabulary in communication activities across learning environments. Furthermore, we will focus on additional assessment and intervention supports for encouraging language growth for the emergent communicator and how augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) supports and strategies to help realize their communication potential.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Introduction and review of a core word approach for communication
  • Describe three targeted activities that support communication with core vocabulary across learning environments
  • Describe three intervention techniques using AAC that increase intentional communication
  • Identify two high-tech AAC solutions that can be implemented with the emergent communicator population
