Course Description: In this session, we will review a core word strategy approach supporting both communication and literacy development for individuals with complex communication needs.  Based on best practices, participants will review research and strategies to support core vocabulary for communication as well as core word lesson plans to support literacy development.  We will review the Snap + Core First communication software and demonstrate how to target core vocabulary in communication activities across learning environments. 

Learning Objectives:  Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Review 3 language characteristics of a core word strategy
  • Describe 3 targeted activates that support communication with core vocabulary across learning environments.
  • Describe 2 types of implementation strategies that support literacy development using core words.

Presenter: Patrick Brune M.S., CCC-SLP.  Patrick has provided assessment, therapy, and consultation services for children and adults with severe speech and language disabilities for over 25 years. He worked as a clinical supervisor for Queens College, in New York, and as a related service provider for the NYC Department of Education, providing AAC support for preschool and school age students. Patrick is a member of the Tobii Dynavox Training and Implementation team and has presented and completed workshops nationally and internationally.
