This workshop will focus on strategies that build communication and learning skills for students with complex needs. Of focus will be a review and implementation of strategies for developing academic areas of reading and writing while utilizing communication partner strategies, modeling, and implementation of low-tech literacy supports. Throughout the day, this workshop will highlight how these strategies can be utilized within naturally occurring learning environments, such as play-based activities and joint book reading interactions.
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion, (1) Participants will be able to utilize two communication systems to model a book read aloud activity. (2) Participants will be able to utilize two communication partner strategies that support a small group language activity (everyday activity, play-based activity, book read-aloud). (3) Participants will choose two low-tech literacy solutions to support writing skill development for the complex learner.
