Training Type: Implementation Workshop
Course Description: Where do you typically start when introducing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)? If you are like most people, you probably start with activities where an individual can request a motivating object or action. But, what happens next? What happens when we run out of things to request? In this session, we will help you develop specific strategies to go beyond requesting - into the world of asking questions, making comments, protesting, expressing opinions, and other communicative functions. We will use lecture, discussion, video examples, and small-group activities to explore the power of various communicative functions, vocabulary selection, teaching strategies, and specific ways to facilitate communication beyond requesting.

Loyal has prior experience as an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) evaluator and trainer serving clients of the Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center in Los Angeles and the Assistive Technology Exchange Center (ATEC) in Orange County, California. As a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), Loyal served children and adults with Cerebral Palsy, ALS, Traumatic Brain Injury, spinal cord injury, and other medically complex needs focusing on communication and computer access. Loyal’s passion for his clients and AAC technology led him to the Learning Services Team at Tobii Dynavox where he currently supports internal and external customer training and implementation needs as a Learning Consultant.
