Course Description: Where do you start when you introduce Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to someone? If you are like most people, you might create communication opportunities around activities where the individual who uses AAC might request favorite items or activities. You might model such phrases as “I want a book” or “I want music” or “I want a cookie.” We often start with "requests" because it is easy to show the power of communication when the result is requesting something that is important to that communicator. But, what happens next? What happens when we run out of things to request? What happens when they seem “bored” by requesting? In this session, we will help you develop specific strategies to go beyond requesting…into the world of asking questions, making comments, protesting, expressing opinions, and other communicative functions.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to:
• List 3 communicative functions beyond requesting.
• List 2 partner communication strategies that move AAC communicators beyond requesting.
• Plan to teach at least one communicative function to an individual using AAC in an everyday setting.
