Compass – General Overview - 10:00-11:00

In this session we will review the Compass communication software developed with specific cohorts in mind. We will explore the communication tools that are common to each pageset as well as different language organization layouts and basic steps for customizing content. We will take a deeper dive into three primary pagesets that serve a wide range of communication abilities: Core First, Master Page and All Access. Supporting resources to help plan for implementation in various communication settings will be discussed.   

Communicator 5 Overview 11:00-12:00

In this session we will provide a quick overview of Eye Tracking as a way to access the Communicator 5 communication software. Participants will review the basics of Eye Tracking technology how it can be used to control your computer with your eyes instead of using a traditional keyboard and mouse. Additionally, we will review the Communicator 5 software and the communication profiles that support individuals with complex communication needs.

Lunch Break 12:00-1:00

Beyond Requesting 1:00-2:00

Requesting is an easy way to show the purpose of communication, and we hope the requested items or activities will help our communicators become excited about communication. But, what happens next? What happens when we run out of things to request? What happens when they seem “bored”? In this session, we will help you develop specific strategies to go beyond requesting…into the world of asking questions, making comments, protesting, expressing opinions, and other communicative functions. 

Compass – Behavioral Supports 2:00-3:00

In this session we will discuss the relationship between communication and the four primary reasons behind challenging behavior. We will describe prevention strategies using a variety of behavior supports and demonstrate these within the software. We will explore vocabulary strategies to replace challenging behavior and review video case studies to increase the understanding of demonstrated behavior supports and techniques. Finally, we will show supporting resources to help plan for implementation in various communication settings.
