Core First and the power to pave your path to literacy
At the heart of Snap is Core First, a pageset that is centered on Tobii Dynavox’s systematic delivery of the Core Word frameword, Topics, QuickFires, Behavior Supports, Word Lists, and Keyboards. Core First, which is rooted in research by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, helps the communicator continuously build vocabulary and skills and takes advantage of motor learning by introducing new vocabulary systematically and purposefully, which allows users to move up or down and always know where to find vocabulary. It is built on three pillars for communication success: growth, engagement and literacy.
How does it help users grow?
Core First was designed for you to move forward on your communication journey, and as you evolve, Core First will evolve with you – meaning you’ll never lose what you’ve already learned as you unlock additional vocabulary and new concepts. On day one of using Core First, it’s not about where you are, but where you are going. It’s safe to start where you are and know that the system will strategically maintain positions of content to offer a fluid system of growth as you’re ready. No other Core Word system has applied this well thought-out approach and strategy to vocabulary growth before.
Why is engagement important?
Core First allows its users to be engaged in quick, real-time conversation about the topics that are most important to them, which leads to engagement. These are the features that make real communication possible! Within Core First, you can easily find the right kind of messages for every level of communicator needed in a huge library of topics, situations, and events. A rich set of tools, which include Core, Quickfires, Topics, Keyboards, Word Lists, and Behavior Supports, are available for in-the-moment communication in a variety of situations and environments that all lead to greater user engagement. For example, Topics give you a variety of common, everyday topics for timely and meaningful social interaction that can be used to interact without the need for complex language and literacy skills. By moving throughout the tools provided, communicators can actively stay a part of the conversation they are participating in and remain engaged with communication partners.
In addition, if you’re a good communicator, you have the choice to create custom and unique word utterance or choose something from Quickfires or Topics for more timely communication. In this situation, these tools allow you to communicate more timely and precisely and you can always determine what your need is at any given point. Our combination of tools provide what you need to be successful, at any given time. No other software provides this type of connectivity as systematically as we do. Core First gives you a seamless way to use the right tool at the right time for any situation!
Is literacy possible?
Yes, we believe that all communicators should have access to literacy tools. No matter your starting point, Core First will help you continuously grow your skills and build upon them – making literacy possible. In this software, you can start at the most basic level and then build on it – making literacy possible! We also offer various tools that help to pave the road to building literacy skills including Core First Learning. The Accessible Literacy Learning (ALL) program, created by Dr. Janice Light, Ph.D. and Dr. David McNaughton Ph.D., of Penn State University, is an evidence-based approach designed specifically to teach basic reading skills to students who are non-verbal and require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Core Word Lessons and Books also help to support literacy skills. In addition, we’ve utilized research gained as part of Project Core from the University of North Carolina and the work they are doing there.
