Our view is that competence should be presumed, with the burden on the teachers and others around the person to find ways of helping the person communicate” (Rubin et al, 2001). As clinicians, teachers, aides, and parents, we all seek the measure of success in the classroom that ensures a more inclusive environment; one that fosters these students’ emerging AAC skills, supports growth and provides opportunities for inclusive interactions with a variety of people.
This workshop is designed to walk you through incorporating building blocks for success using AAC in the classroom to support communication, participation and positive behavior. Throughout the day, we will gather information specific to your AAC user. By the end of the day, you will have created one lesson/teaching plan supporting the use of AAC during an academic activity. You will leave this session with specific strategies, plans, and resources to use when you return to your classroom, and new ideas for teaching others to better support the use of AAC!
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Define augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and describe how it can be used to address student communication, social and academic goals.
• Name and describe two broad types of vocabulary needed for classroom participation.
• List 1-2 communication partner strategies to support successful participation in the classroom.
• Create at least two lesson/teaching plans to support the use of AAC in classroom academic and transactional activities.
Lindsey Frohn, M.S., CCC-SLP, graduated with a Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 2010. Following graduation, she worked in an rehabilitation hospital for over 6 years as a pediatric speech-language pathologist. She worked with children and adolescents with both acquired injuries and developmental disorders. While Working with a wide variety of diagnoses and disorders, she developed a passion for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to increase her patients’ abilities to communicate successfully and decrease their frustrations. Now with Tobii Dynavox she is presently a member of the Clinical Training & Implementation Team where she develops and conducts internal and customer trainings, creates implementation resources, and presents at conferences about AAC topics.

Lindsey worked in a rehabilitation hospital for over six years as a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) before joining Tobii Dynavox. While working with a wide variety of diagnoses and disorders, she developed a passion for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to increase her patients’ abilities to communicate successfully. Lindsey is presently a Learning Consultant with the Learning Services team at Tobii Dynavox. In this role, she develops and facilitates internal and external customer training and implementation resources. Lindsey also presents at local, national, and international conferences about AAC topics.
