Meet Casey!

Name: Casey Rorher
Age: 12
Home: Hermosa Beach, California
Product: Tobii Dynavox I-12
Condition: Cerebral palsy

At just 15 years old, Casey has many roles: big brother to his siblings Anna and Luke,  high school student, community advocate,  actor and writer. In all of them, he is happy.

“He has the most positive outlook on life and keeps everyone else going, too,” said his mom Beth.

Since second grade, Casey has been using Tobii Dynavox eye-controlled devices for communication and currently uses an I-12. Casey says his inability to speak, which stems from profound cerebral palsy, is like being thirsty and all you can do is stare at a glass of water. He wrote a whimsical play entitled "Once Upon A Road Trip" that tells why he would be lost without the technology.

“He has the most positive outlook on life and keeps everyone else going, too.”

"People respond to him on a very genuine level.” said Jeannine Madden, Casey’s longtime instructional assistant and tutor. “His easy manner and ability to convey what's in his heart are what set Casey apart.” Casey thrived in school, she said, using AAC technology more fully each year. Check out these videos where Casey uses his Tobii Dynavox device for  speeches at his eighth grade graduation ceremony and the dedication of a universally accessible playground  he helped establish.

"So much of our personality is wrapped up in our ability to communicate instantly. I would never know Casey if it weren’t for that device."

Craig Greely

Owner of Family Theatre Inc. and Casey's friend

Well-known for his involvement with Family Theatre Inc. near his family’s home in the Los Angeles area, Casey shined as the silent king in  “Once Upon a Mattress”  and used his device to exclaim, “I can speak! I can speak! And I have a lot to say!” when the spell of silence that plagued the king is broken.

Casey’s timing is impeccable in this comedy routine with theater owner Craig Greely, who described his friendship with Casey as enlightening. “So much of our personality is wrapped up in our ability to communicate instantly. I would never know Casey if it weren’t for that device.”
