Self-Advocacy and Abuse Prevention in AAC

Description

People with disabilities are at a higher risk of experiencing abuse such as violence, sexual, neglect, and other types of abuse, compared to those without disabilities.Among individuals with disabilities, those with complex communication needs are especially at risk due to difficulties in using speech effectively where they encounter significant obstacles when trying to report crimes.

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) empowers individuals with communication disabilities to exercise their autonomy, make decisions, and share information. In this session, various communication methods and strategies will be discussed, with an emphasis on graphic symbol-based systems. Non-literate individuals with physical disabilities face additional hurdles and cannot rely on written forms of communication or sign language, which are accepted in court as alternative communication methods.
